Chemical Safety Assessment
Exposure scenarios
Are you confident that your CSAs and ESs are fully compliant? Manufacturers and importers are required under the REACH Regulation to prepare chemical safety assessments (CSAs) and exposure scenarios (ESs) accurately and to relay them throughout the supply chain.
More often than not, ESs are provided in English only, even though the law stipulates that these documents must be available in the official language of the Member State. This can lead to risks during inspections, delays and extra costs.
Through CHESAR software, BIG offers you a framework that combines accuracy, efficiency and compliance.
What is CHESAR?
CHESAR is ECHA's software tool for preparing and managing chemical safety reports (CSRs) and exposure scenarios (ESs). The tool enables you to:
Draft or amend CSAs and CSR
Develop ESs and translate them easily
Ensure that documents are available in all official EU languages
Thanks to CHESAR software, BIG offers you a solution that is both efficient and cost-effective.
Please also read our REACH page for more background information.
Why is this important?
eSDSs must be translated into the official language of the member state where the product is marketed.
English ESs without correct translations may lead to non-compliance during inspections.
Drafting, maintaining, and translating CSAs and ESs requires specialised knowledge, tools and resources.

CSA and ES
A chemical safety assessment (CSA) consists of an exposure assessment and risk characterisation that is mandatory for manufacturers and importers under REACH. The results are recorded in a chemical safety report (CSR).
Once a CSR has been drafted, the corresponding exposure scenarios (ESs) must be attached to the safety data sheet (SDS).
This creates an extended SDS (eSDS). For mixtures, there is no obligation to include ESs, but the information on uses and risk management measures must be included in or attached to the SDS.

In addition to CHESAR, we also use recognised models such as ECETOC TRA, EUSES, ART en ConsExpo, ensuring an accurate and scientifically sound approach for each CSA.
Furthermore, we also address the needs of lead registrants and downstream users who often require their own CSA/CSR, for example when a lead registrant does not wish to include certain uses or when specific uses must remain confidential.
